Oral sedation, also called oral conscious sedation, is a form of sedation delivered as a liquid or pill. The effects of oral sedation range from mild to moderate, depending on the dosage given as determined by our dentist. Under oral sedation, you will be drowsy, calm, and deeply relaxed. We often use oral sedation in combination with a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area and put you at ease.
You may not fall asleep under oral sedation, but if you do, you can be easily awakened following treatment. Some patients experience grogginess as a result of oral sedation, but the effects typically pass within an hour. Be sure that someone can drive you home following your appointment until the sedation has completely worn off.
